Traditional spot welders are based on a 50Hz/60Hz transformer. The bigger the transformer is, the more powerful is the spot welder.
The picture on the left shows a 75kg (161lbs) three phases transformer.
In Damien's new series High Frequency Welders, the transformer looks completely different, the windings are replaced by large copper plates, and the magnetic core is now tiny
The total transformer weight is reduced to 11kg (24lbs).
The higher the frequency, the smaller the transformer
The drastic reduction in size is based on a physics principle : for a given power, the higher the frequency is, the smaller the transformer gets...
but the more challenging the inverter design is.
Today's Damien inverter are based on a unique patented design allowing to work at more than 6.5kHz (up to 20kHz), and transformers delivering with up to 40,000 Amps have been tested in our labs !
The closest competitor's inverter reach a frequency of 1kHz and hardly delivers 8000 Amps.
Besides the weight reduction there are some major benefits to the high frequency inverter which are summarized below :
Smaller line fuses for the same welding current : lower electricity bill
Better current regulation : perfectly reproducible welding spots
Our inverters are available in air cooled for high duty cycle use (typically car repairing) or water cooled for very high duty cycle industrial applications.
