Using A Spot Welder Do's and Don'ts
|
Spot Welder initial setup

- The air pressure should be adjusted to 8 bar.
- Connect the earth
- Connect the 2 phases (or 3 phases for 3 phased machine) to the line
- Use a delayed circuit breaker.
|
X gun electrode adjustment

- Set the machine current to zero
- Close the clamp and adjust the electrode so that they are perfectly aligned
- Open the clamp and pull one of electrode out 2mm (0.1") to make sure the electrodes are in contact when the clamp is closed.
|

- Sharpen the electrodes with an electrode sharpener or a file
- The electrode shape should be regular and non flat, typically round or conic.
- The extremity of the electrode should be flat, with a diameter of 3-4 mm (0.15").
- Open the clamp and pull one of electrode out 2mm (0.1") to make sure the electrodes are in contact when the clamp is closed.
|
X gun welding preparation

- Clean both sides of the sheet metal on the area of the welding spot, to insure a good electrical contact between the electrodes and the metal sheets, and between the 2 metal sheets.
|
One sided gun electrode sharpening

- Sharpen the electrodes with an electrode sharpener or a file
- The electrode shape should be regular and non flat, typically round or conic.
- The extremity of the electrode should be flat, with a diameter of 3-4 mm (0.15").
|
One sided gun welding preparation

- Clean both side of the top metal sheet
- Clean the top side of the bottom metal sheet
- Clean the bottom metal sheet at the ground contact point.
|
One sided gun welding recommendations

- Apply a pressure of at least 10kg (20lbs) on the electrode
- Always weld on the thinner metal sheet side.
|

- Always start with the furthest point to the ground to the closest.
- Always connect the ground to the bottom metal sheet.
- Use a strong blocking clamp to secure the ground (no spring clamp)
